About St. Louis
St. Louis does not have the architectural history of other cities such as Chicago or New York. Pierre Liguest Laclede and Rene Auguste Chouteau founded it as a fur-trading center in the 1760s and named it after a French king. In March 1804, the Louisiana Purchase was completed and St. Louis became part of the United States. The 1904 World's Fair was held in St. Louis and it's often looked to as one of the most exciting periods in St. Louis history.
I moved to St. Louis in December 1991 and remained there until April 1999. After living in Tulsa, a city with a lot of Art Deco architecture, I was initially disappointed with St. Louis. However, I soon found many buildings which I very much appreciated and some of my favourites are on this page. Most of these pictures were taken after I found out that I was moving away from St. Louis. As with many things, I postponed photographing the local architecture until it was no longer local to me.
